In the summer I love doing creative activities with my little ones. The school year gets so busy with homework and after school activities, that it’s so nice to slow down during the summer and share some of my passions with our kids. Last summer I started my two oldest girls, Savannah and Matilda, on the sewing machine and they absolutely love it! They’ve since made a few more sewing projects, but we haven’t done a ton of sewing this summer since we’ve had to keep the house looking nice while we try to sell it (yes, no one has bought The Cottage Home yet……insert sad face). We will be moving in the new few weeks and I have made two special spots for my kids in the studio, so I definitely foresee some sewing time in the new house.
So meanwhile, we have enjoyed some mess free crafts that have been just as fun. I was sent this DIY Fascinator Headband and a Fairy Princess Costume kit from the lovely folks at Joann Fabrics and the girls could not wait to get their hands on them. We opted for the DIY Fascinator kit first. These are from a new line of crafting products by Jennifer Garner called ‘We Made It‘. And what I love about these kits is that my girls truly made these by themselves (ages 6 and 7) with very little guidance from me.
What really surprised me was the quality of the materials included. A lot of times the kids craft kits contain cheap materials, but these were really lovely. I also loved that the pieces were already cut so that it is creative in the assembly process rather than the preparation. I don’t know that my girls would have been able to cut the fabric and leaves just the way they wanted. So the kit allowed them to be creative without frustration. Plus pre-cut pieces equals no mess around the house.
Another thing I should ad is that the kits come with plenty of supplies. There were WAY more pretty sparkly flowers and circles as well as sparkle fabric than we needed which was nice to not have to ration them out for each headband.
I’d say it took a good hour to complete one of the fascinators including the time it took for the girls to pick out their colors, read the instructions and assemble them together.
If you are looking for some fun crafts to do with your little ones this summer, I highly recommend checking out some of these kits. I’ve got my eye on the Hoop Hide Out kit. My kids LOVE forts and tents, so I know they would get a kick out of creating their own hide out. Maybe in the new house (did I mention we move in a few weeks…….oh yeah, I’m a LITTLE excited). I treasure the moments where we can turn off the TV and iPads and just enjoy some creating together. Such fun ways to encourage creative play and projects that kids can be proud of and say ‘We Made It!’
