This year is going to be about some serious organization here at The Cottage Home. With having three children under the age of 4, I sometimes feel like certain spaces in my home are spiraling out of control. Well, no more! I’m taking action and going to try my best to gain some control over the clutter that seems to come with having small children.
Now, I know there will be messes and chaos from time to time, but I’m going to try to implement some systems for our family to make life a little more orderly. And hopefully help me keep my sanity. I don’t know about you, but when things in my home and life are in order I can accomplish SO much more.
What a good idea!! So simple, but one I wouldn’t have thought of myself; thanks for haring, and I look forward to reading more ‘operation organisation’ later in the year!
Sharing,
I also had 3 kids in 4 years..the youngest is 1 now and toy organization is still a struggle for me. My kids know the toys that they aren’t allowed to play with when the baby is awake, but the whole putting one thing away before taking out another is really a struggle for us. They seem to have their minds all over the place when they are playing. They could make a tower with their blocks that they use while playing with their food set while they play dress up and have a party with all of their stuffed animals…It’s intense. It also makes for one very very messy room. I look forward to more organization posts!
How cute! I really need to do this. I am so unorganized. Thanks for the inspiration !
What a great idea! And I kinda think I already won the contest since I requested organization posts, and wham, next day….wow do you deliver 🙂
Totally just had a “Duh!” moment as I read your post. I do this with my shoes, but haven’t thought about doing this with my kids’ toys. My daughter loves to help us tidy up, and this system would help her keep her stuff neat and organized.
I love this idea. Thinking it might work for sewing notions, etc. enjoy your children, they will be gone waaaaay too soon. 🙂 Deb in Tex
You did a beautiful job! I did the same thing but took actual photos of the items before laminating them. Getting the pics from Google is genious! Yes, I wanted my daughter to know where to put her toys, but most importantly I was tired of my hubby cleaning up and putting items willy nilly in any box with space available. lol I am definitely going to take this idea to other areas of my home. Thanks for sharing.
With 2 girls 3 and under, I can sure relate to this! Organization is on my to do list for 2012 as well, and I’ll have to try this out. I have a bin system, but unlabeled and it needs updating as the older girl’s toys come with more and more pieces.
Heh, excellent way to start the new year :o) (Says she who spent her new year organising her own toys, with labels :oD )
This is also the system we are going to try out too… question tho: do they pull the lables off? I wanted to use velcro too but my husband thinks we should just packing table them because they kids might just pull them off? Has that happened yet?
I am so envious of your new storage shelves! We’ve maxed out our storage capability… don’t know what to do with all the toys anymore! AH! Looks fantastic and I bet you feel fantastic about it, too!
I just reorganized the toys of our 3 children, especially after addition of the newest toys from the holidays. I used my label maker, however I will so be doing picture labels tomorrow (in addition to mine) to help my younger ones who don’t read yet. Besides I have a 4th on the way and organization is going to be ESSENTIAL! =) Thanks for the great idea!
Love your organization idea! I think I will use your concept for organizing my fabric stash (my goal for 2012). Like the shelving..will have to make a quick trip to IKEA. Hope the sale is still on. Like the camera strap tutorial…will be making one for my Cannon T2I strap.

Ready for it ladies I’m sooooooo organised in the meal planning aspect I’ve just finished planning 31 main meals, 31 breakfasts and 8 lots of cooking sweets that I’m hoping will get us through the month (fingers crossed). Only down side to my life is that I’m not too organised in other aspects e.g. washing, folding, toys, books, house plans, shoes, linen cupboard, pantry – are you seeing my problem I need serious help with the toys and clothes aspect given I have 4 children ages 6,3,23 months & 2 months….
Excellent way to store toys and help kids learn where things go.
What a great idea! I have a large closet that is referred to as the ‘toy closet’ for my grandchildren. I have totes for them to put the toys in but it seems it never happens! I’m going to try this to see if they can keep their toy area more organized. Thanks loads!!
I may have just missed it. Where can I find those great plastic containers?
I love the shelves. Could you link to the specific shelves on IKEA’s website or post the name of the item at Ikea?
Hi Lindsay,
I just came across your blog when I googled velcro labels.. how neat! I was wondering if you could apply this same concept with a dresser? I would like to label the childrens’ dressers but I am afraid that the velcro on the wood will not come off. I would love any input! Thanks you!!
Love your storage. Just a question. I notice that you have some little people. Do you have any of the big pieces that go with them? How do you store those? Any suggestions would be so helpful!
To keep storage bins organized, it’s good for kids to be able see what is inside right away. Set storage down low or on the floor so kids can see right into the containers or have ones that are see through.
