On the Cutting Table: Fabric

It’s been awhile since I’ve done an ‘On the Cutting Table’ post. The truth is, there hasn’t been a ton on the cutting table this last year due to this and that. But 2016 is a new year and there are lots of fun exciting things on the horizon for The Cottage Mama! This last week I received a box of fabric from Riley Blake Designs for some upcoming projects. Riley Blake designers always create the most adorable fabrics. Seriously. It just doesn’t get a whole lot cuter than these……..

This line is called ‘Farm Girl‘ by October Afternoon for Riley Blake Designs. I always love the fabrics that October Afternoon Designs. I’ve used a lot of their fabrics for different things for the kids……..dresses, trick-or-treat bags, etc. I actually can’t decide what to make with this fabric. There are so many possibilities. I can envision an adorable quilt, but I can also see the most adorable little girls dress. I would probably use my Georgia Vintage Dress or Miss Matilda Pattern or maybe I’d create something brand new. I’m not sure, but this fabric inspires a lot of things in me. It’s just so. darn. cute.!

I was thrilled to find out that Deena Rutter was releasing Wheels 2 for Riley Blake Designs. I loved the first Wheels collection and used it in a lot of boy projects that I did prior to having Caspian (my own boy). So my Caspian, LOVES cars. I haven’t met another little boy that likes cars as much as he does. I’m sure there are boys out there that have the same passion for cars as he does, but this just came as such a shock to me since I was used to all things girly having Savannah and Matilda before him. So if you recall, Caspian’s nursery (you can see it HERE, if you don’t remember) was nautical themed and pretty much red, white, blue and tan. So we are still keeping a lot of those colors in his new room, but these fabrics are going to be made into a car quilt for his bedroom.

You should have seen the look on his face when I opened up the box that had this fabric inside. He just lit up from ear to ear! He can’t wait to have me sew something special for him. Now I don’t consider my a quilter (that’s more my mom’s thing right now), but I’ve done a few quilts and I’m planning to use a pretty basic pattern for his bed quilt. I don’t want to get too crazy with this project.

And this last set of fabric is called ‘Vintage Kitchen‘ by Andrea Muller for Riley Blake Designs. It’s a really fun line. I had trouble deciding which fabrics to select from this collection. I’m going to be sewing something from this fabric for the ‘Vintage Kitchen’ fabric tour. I have something in mind for Josephine, but that could always change before March. ‘Vintage Kitchen‘ definitely has a retro vibe to it and there are a lot more kitchen-y prints than I’ve selected here. Andrea is also releasing coordinating woven ribbon and machine embroidery designs to coordinate with this fabric line. That will be fun to incorporate into my design!

So that’s what’s going on in the studio right now. I’m also working on another big project (but that’s a secret…..for now) and no, it’s definitely not another baby (we are all set in that department). I’m really happy to be back into the swing of things. It feels good. I hope you’re having a wonderful week!

Happy Sewing!

  1. What is that denim-look fabric in the Wheels 2 picture? Can’t find it in the Wheels line but I love it!

    • Ah, good catch! There are actually a few prints in that picture from Lucky Star (also from Riley Blake) that coordinate really well with Wheels 2.
