A New Summer Picnic Dress

Summer Picnic Dress. FREE pattern from The Cottage Mama!

Last weekend I created a New Summer Picnic Dress which is another version of my Free Summer Picnic Dress Pattern. I haven’t made this dress in a long time, so it was really fun to sew one of these again. I originally created this dress for my Matilda (who is now 6 years old), but the one that I sewed here is for our little Josephine (16 months old).

Happy 11th Birthday, Matilda Jane!

Dear Matilda,

Happy Birthday! Today you turn 11 years old. You’ve been counting down the days until your birthday for about 20 days now and the day is finally here! Things are a little different this year on your birthday since we are experiencing a global pandemic (COVID-19), but nevertheless, we will still be celebrating our special girl (you!) today! Here are a few things I’d like to remember about you when you turned 11 years old and a few things you might like to remember about your 11 year old self……

  1. You love all things NASA. You know so much about space and hope to be an Aeronautical Engineer when you grow up. And if that doesn’t work out, you want to be a Paleontologist.
  2. You’ve been spending every Weds. this summer with your Grandpa (Grumpy) building rockets. You love getting to spend this time with Grumpy and work on something you love.
  3. You still play piano and continue to get better year after year.
  4. You’ve been playing percussion in the school band for two years and were accepted into the advanced jr. high band for 6th grade.
  5. You also still love singing. You are in a choir outside of school that meets once a week (during non-Covid times) and performs several times throughout the year.
  6. This year you sang again in the school talent show. You sang the song ‘Naughty’ from Matilda, the musical and you were fantastic. I’m always so surprised how comfortable you are on stage.
  7. You are still shy, but only towards adults. You speak to adults a bit more than you used to, but you still get nervous answering questions to someone that you don’t know.
  8. You love chicken strips, burgers and pizza. You don’t like a lot of variety of foods in your diet. Something we need to work on moving forward.
  9. You got an architecture Lego set, new NASA shirt, space water bottle, a card game about space, two books you REALLY wanted and a very furry robe for your birthday. You are a happy girl.
  10. You are having two friends over today (again, we can’t have large numbers of people together right now) for a small party. You are planning on going on our 100 foot slip-n-slide, doing a craft, eating pizza and having an ice cream bar instead of cake.
  11. You had an amazing teacher this year, Mrs. Bak. She was such a blessing and the perfect fit for you. We will miss her next year.
  12. You have a lot of good friends. You are well liked by so many of your peers!
  13. You are still a Girl Scout. You have graduated to being a Cadet starting next year, so we just ordered your new tan vest and patches.
  14. You and your sister, Savannah, still share a room. During the Covid-19 quarantine, we redecorated your room from pink and girly to black and white chic. It still looks feminine but way more grown up. You both love it!
  15. Your favorite animal is still pigs. Although you adore our dog, Scarlette, too (for some reason you call her your ‘Smore-baby’).
  16. You sleep with your big purple gummy bear nightlight on next to your bed and still like lots of stuffed animals piled on top of you. You love your weighted blanket too.
  17. You are very helpful. You are the first to volunteer to help with your younger siblings or do something without asking. Thank you!!
  18. You are really good with little kids and you love being around them. You are really good with our little neighbor, Luca, and he adores you.
  19. You like to sing and act in the shower. I love listening to you (even though, you probably don’t realize I can hear you).
  20. You are super smart. You will be in the accelerated math and reading/writing program in jr. high. I don’t think you realize how your mind operates in such a special, smart and unique way. You are going to do amazing things in life!

Matilda Jane, what would we do without you? You are such a joy to everyone around you. You are a sweet and sensitive soul who loves to snuggle, give hugs and be close to others. You bring a smile to my face every single day and we are so lucky to have you as our daughter. Happy Birthday, sweet girl!

I love you from here to the moon and back again!

Love,

Mama

Bunny Plush Toy Tutorial

Bunny Plush Toy Tutorial by Lindsay Wilkes from The Cottage Mama. www.thecottagemama.com

My children love stuffed animals and I wanted to make a sweet little bunny plush toy for our new baby girl, Josephine Mae. If you own a copy of my ‘Woodland Hand Applique Set‘ you can simply use the large bunny applique to create this adorable toy. This bunny rabbit takes no time at all to sew, so if you’re looking for something to make for your little one, give this a try!

Happy 12th Birthday, Savannah!

Dear Savannah,

Happy birthday, Savannah!! Today you turn 12 years old. 12 years old…….I can hardly believe it. In a years time, I will have my first teenager. It just doesn’t seem possible. When I started The Cottage Mama, you were a little toddler and now look at you…….you are a beautiful young woman. Here are some things I would like to remember about you when you turned 12 years old and some things you might like to know about your 12 year old self.

  1. You love, love, love dance. You spend 6 or so days a week dancing working on ballet, pointe, tap, jazz and contemporary.
  2. This year you are competing in the Youth American Grand Prix (YAGP) ballet competition with your variation from Paquita and your contemporary piece called Ignite. This year you have learned so many things in dance and have grown so much. I’m always in awe of your dedication, discipline and hard work. You are also on the Comp Crew team at dance and in the Dance Theatre group.
  3. You play clarinet at school. You are in the advanced jr. high band which is an honor as a 6th grader.
  4. You love all things food related. You love to eat food and you love food shaped items. You have a giant avocado pillow and taco pillow. You have lots of pineapples in your room as well as donut related things. If it has to do with food….you love it.
  5. Speaking of food….your favorite foods are cheeseburgers, broccoli cheese soup, roast beef sandwiches, tortellini, mashed potatoes, baked beans, bbq pork, avocado toast and tacos. You also love ice cream and sweet treats!
  6. You still like to arrive everywhere early. Your mantra ‘Early is on time and one time is late!’. If you are not 20 mins. early to dance, you are not a happy camper. I’ve learned to live with your ways, however, you don’t like when other people are in charge of getting you somewhere since they don’t always understand your ways of doing things.
  7. You are smart. You are a great writer and are in accelerated math. You are lucky because these things come very naturally to you.
  8. You are organized. Well, everywhere except your room. Your room looks like a tornado blew through (though you claim you know where everything is located)…….organized chaos, I guess. But other than your room, you are amazingly organized. I never have to check to see if you’ve done your homework, studied for a test, gotten your things together for dance. You do all of that on your own. This is something I love so much about you and is very helpful!
  9. You are secretive about the type of music that you enjoy. I don’t know why, but you won’t tell us what musical artists you listen to…….just something personal that you want to keep to yourself.
  10. You have lots of friends. Your closest friends are your dance friends since you spend more time with them then you spend with your family. But you also have some really great school friends as well. Your best friend at school right now is Amelia.
  11. You have taken an interest in calligraphy lately and one of your teachers at school is teaching you some techniques.
  12. You love to play gymnastics with your younger sister, Josephine. You like to be the coach and she is your student. You’ve taught her lots of great things during your gymnastics sessions.
  13. You tend to wear the same thing to school everyday…….jeans, boots, dance t-shirt and dance fleece coat. I guess it’s your uniform. I wish you’d wear more of the cute things in your closet, but you are old enough to make your own decisions about clothing and who am I to interfere with you developing your personal style?
  14. You are particular about the way things feel when it comes to clothing. I think we’ve tried 30 different leotards and you’ve maybe found one that you like. You say none of them feel right.
  15. You have a phone, but no social media. I’m not ready to go there yet. You like making fun movie trailers on your phone and chatting with friends, but that’s about it.
  16. I’m really hoping this next year, you learn to do your own dance hair. Right now, I still do your buns and ponytails. You don’t want to do it because you don’t think it will be as perfect as the way I do it. But it will be a huge relief when you can do that yourself. You do most of your own performance make-up. I just help with the liquid liner and the lipstick, but the rest is all you.
  17. You do not like being outside. You would prefer to be indoors always. You don’t like bugs. You are not thrilled that Daddy has decided he is going to start keeping bees in the backyard, but you’ve said that is more of a reason for you to not go outside.
  18. This is the first full year that you have performed en pointe. It’s been a challenge for you to find the right shoe. I’m hoping this next year brings you some much needed confidence in the pointe department. Starting something new is never easy, but I know with hard work, you will achieve success.
  19. You and your sister, Matilda, still share a room. You would really like to have your own room, but that’s just not going to happen. You’ve also requested to have less pink in your room, so perhaps a room makeover with be in the not-to-distant future.
  20. You love your one-on-one time with Mama at all of our dance competitions. I think your siblings get a little jealous of our time together, but I hope these are memories that you will never forget. I know I will remember our special ‘girl’ times always.

Savannah Rose………I could go on and on about all the fantastic qualities you possess. You are a daughter that truly makes our family so proud. You are kind, thoughtful, organized, loyal, smart, talented, hard working, self motivated, determined and so much more!

Happy Birthday to you sweet girl!

I love you from here to the moon and back again!

Love,

Mama

Georgia Vintage Christmas Dresses

Georgia Vintage Christmas Dress. Pattern from The Cottage Mama. www.thecottagemama.com

I absolutely love having special Christmas outfits for my kids. The last two years my mom (aka Grandma Jane) has volunteered to make the kids Christmas dresses / outfits, but since she was out of commission recovering from her aortic valve replacement surgery, I knew I was definitely on duty this year. Generally I like to make the girls coordinating looks, but this year I decided to go for completely matching. I used my Georgia Vintage Dress Pattern and made Savannah a size 6 and Matilda a size 5 and they both looked absolutely darling (if I do say so myself). Now I don’t have any super-wonderful pictures of the girls in their dresses because sometimes I just like to try to enjoy the moments with my kids and not have them pose for pictures………and I definitely was all about that over this holiday season. So my ‘fourth child’ (Missy Mannequin) will have to do.
