Quick Column Quilts Book Review and Giveaway

Quick Column Quilts by Nancy Zieman. Book Review and Giveaway on The Cottage Mama. www.thecottagemama.com

Today I’m excited to introduce to you Nancy Zieman’s latest book, Quick Column Quilts! This lovely new book is going to be perfect for those of you that don’t like to spend weeks and weeks on a project. I know for me, one of the reasons I love sewing children’s clothing is that I can finish a detailed piece of clothing in about one day. And I would definitely call myself a ‘finisher’. How about you? I don’t like to have unfinished projects lying around. So if it’s going to take me a long time to get a project completed, I’m more than likely not going to start it in the first place. So when I saw the sub-title for Nancy’s book, ‘Make 12+ Bold & Beautiful Designs in Half the Time’, I was sold!

The book focuses on column quilts that are easy to assemble even for a beginner quilter. Of course, you can get pretty fancy with the type of quilting that is done once the quilt top is pieced together, but you can also keep in very simple for a more modern approach. The options are endless with the fabrics that you might choose to use. You can certainly use more patterned prints or focus on solids. Whatever your fabric style choice might be, these quilts will take on a personality of their own based on your fabric selection.

My very favorite quilt in the book has to be the ‘Happy-Go-Lucky Chevron Column Quilt’. I can see myself using all sorts of pretty patterned fabrics to create this gorgeous design. It’s simple enough that it won’t take a lot of time, but it appears more complicated with the diagonal chevron style. And did you read the description? ‘No matching necessary – and use only straight stitching!’ Sounds good to me!

Here is a picture of the sample quilt from the book. And when I’m not 34 weeks pregnant and have a little more energy, I will definitely be tackling this quilt. I think it looks doable for a garment sewer, like myself.

The book contains beautiful, full-color illustrations for all the steps in the book, making them very easy to follow. I don’t know about you, but I’m a visual learner, so the more pictures the better!
