DIY Fall Wreath Tutorial

DIY Fall Wreath Tutorial from The Cottage Mama

There’s something about hanging a wreath on the door that makes a house feel like a home. This summer has been a little crazy, to say the least. We are finally moved into our new home and slowly, but surely, are getting unpacked and organized.

The weather this past weekend in Illinois was the perfect start to Fall. Even though I have a million and one other things to get finished around the house, I decided I needed a little creative break and took some time to make a new wreath for our front door. I wanted to do something fall-like, but didn’t want to go the stereotypical orange, red and yellow route with our new house. I wanted to stay a little bit more neutral while still feeling warm and cozy. I took some pictures as I went along, so I could share this DIY Fall Wreath Tutorial with you……just in case you’re feeling in the mood to get your house ready for fall too!

I started with the wreath seen in the picture above. It’s a pretty good size and was only $3.50. I knew I wanted a much more full wreath for our new front door, but I didn’t want to spend $100-$200 on some of the ones that had caught my eye online. I also was looking for a specific color scheme (green, cream, tan, with a hint of cranberry) which was a little bit harder to find than the orange, red and yellow.

I picked up a whole bunch of picks from Hobby Lobby. I didn’t go to Hobby Lobby because they paid me, it just happened to be the closest craft store to our new house. You could find some similar picks at Joann’s or Michael’s as well. I grouped all the different picks and sprays together so I could see exactly what I had purchased.

Now when it comes to the picks / sprays you’re selecting, you want a variety of sizes, colors and textures. I always like to purchase more than I’ll need because you can certainly return any unused pieces. I wanted a large, very full wreath, so in my case I went big, but you could choose smaller pieces for your wreath, if you prefer a less is more approach. Also, don’t limit yourself to the seasonal selection of the craft store. Sometimes you can find fantastic items in the wedding section too!

Create your wreath by starting with the largest pick that you’ve chosen. In my case, that was these large flowers. I spread them out evenly around the wreath by simply sticking the pick into the wreath. The wreath itself is pretty dense, but I twisted the wire pick in the back of the wreath just to make sure it wouldn’t slip out. The more dense your wreath, the less likely your picks/sprays will fall out.

Then I continued to add the larger pieces to the wreath, spreading them fairly evenly around the wreath.

Next, I added the pumpkins. I had three different kinds, ivory, green and twig. And then I added some of these leaf and pod sprays and these four larger acorn sprays around the edge of the wreath. The acorn sprays were sticking out a little bit, so I took a little wire that was left over from the sprays pictured below and secured them in towards the wreath. I liked them out a little, but I didn’t want them to look like wings.

After I had added most of the larger picks and sprays, I wanted to add a little something else to fill in a few gaps. I bought these feather-like sprays and just cut them apart with a wire cutter. You might be able to cut something similar with scissors, but these were tough. They were actually the most expensive item in the wreath, but I got about 3 feather pieces for each spray, plus I really liked the way they looked.

I really didn’t add much florist wire or anything to secure the pieces to the wreath. I did twist some of the wire ends on the picks and sprays towards the back of the wreath, but because I used so many things, they held together nicely.

So what do you think? I absolutely love it. It turned out just how I had envisioned……don’t you love when that happens?

Creating your own home decor items is so much fun and feels so rewarding. Sure I could have bought something (and maybe I should have since I’m so busy right now), but there is something so satisfying about knowing your created a piece yourself.

So here is the New Cottage Home. Our house is definitely starting to feel more like home especially once I hung that wreath on the front door. We only have about one more week of workers finishing off a few things before it will officially be complete! What a long journey. We purchased the home in April and it has been worked on for the last 5 months by our builder. We’ve been in the home for a month now and luckily managed to finally hang something on the walls this past weekend. I can’t wait to show you the inside. I took lots of before pictures so it will be fun to do the before and after comparison.

Moving with four kids is no joke, but we made it and everyone seems very happy! Happy with the house, the yard, their new schools, new routines and new friends. I can’t ask for more than that! I’m hoping to be back blogging more from this point forward. You’ll probably be seeing some additional decorating and home posts from me, but I’ll still be sewing and releasing new patterns, so you’ll still get those as well (and I have a new video sewing series launching this month!).

We are SO looking forward to this new chapter in our lives in the New Cottage Home.

Thanks for stopping by!
