Cottage Quilt Block Pattern

I just received this Cottage Quilt Block back in the mail last week. I don’t know if I mentioned it here, but last year my sewing machine sponsor (Baby Lock) flew me to Iowa to film two episodes of the PBS show Fons and Porter ‘Love of Quilting’ with Mary Fons. A few of you have emailed and said that you saw my episodes (yay!). Surprisingly I haven’t seen them myself. Unfortunately, our PBS station doesn’t pick up the sewing shows, but hopefully I’ll get a copy someday and can check it out……..or not……..it’s always so strange to hear myself talk.

So, as you know, I’m not a big quilter. Now my mom, that’s a different story. So I was a little stumped when I needed to come up with two quilting projects, for two different shows, but only had 30 mins. on each show to demonstrate the projects. The first project I came up with was a super-cute children’s Quilted Scalloped Pillow (I’ll share that with you on another day). And then I had wanted to do a quilted baby bonnet, but the folks at the show said that their audience really preferred quilting projects and did not like garments. No garments (gasp!)! Hmmmm……what to do?

I decide that I wanted to do a tribute to our first home since we were moving and created a Cottage Quilt Block Pattern. The version pictured here was made into a wall hanging. But you could turn this into a pillow or sew multiple blocks together and create a really sweet quilt.

Even though ‘Love of Quilting‘ is a quilting show, I wanted to incorporate trim into both my projects, just so I could stay true to Cottage Mama style. Do you see the rick-rack accent in the roof of the cottage?

My mom helped me figure out what measurements we needed to create the wall hanging because it was making my brain hurt. Thank goodness for moms! I would be lost without her.

I used the fabric ‘Milk, Sugar, Flower’ by Elea Lutz for Penny Rose Fabrics. I absolutely adore this fabric line. It’s sweet, feminine and a little vintage. I chose to use the bird fabric in the tree (since birds tend to hang out in trees) and then I fussy cut the window and door fabric so that it looked like some of the little critters were peeking outside. The fabric for the trunk of the tree was something I had in my stash from a long time ago. I believe it’s from ‘Dear Stella‘, but I’m not sure what fabric line.

So you can catch this episode of ‘Love of Quilting‘ on your local PBS station. You can also find this project in the ‘Love of Quilting’ magazine. My pillow was already released in a previous issue (September / October). But this Cottage Block is either in the current issue or the next one and has all the instructions and measurements that you’ll need. You can also visit the Fons and Porter website for additional information.

I hope you like this Cottage Quilt Block Pattern. I must say, doing this show got me pretty darn excited about quilting. I wonder when my kids will no longer let me sew for them, if I’ll be bitten by the quilting bug? Who knows! Maybe sew…..

Happy Sewing!
