Savannah’s Orange Birthday Party ~ The Invitation

Miss Savannah has a real thing for orange at the moment.  It’s her absolute favorite color.  Who knew she would be so en-vogue with her color selection? Seeing as though ‘Tangerine Tango‘ is one of the Pantone Colors of the Year she is staying right ahead of the current trends.  Just kidding……she obviously doesn’t have a clue about that, but I just thought it was kind of funny.

Anyway, Miss S. is crazy for orange, so she decided she wanted an orange birthday party this year.  What does that mean?  It means that everything is going to be orange ~ the food, drink, candy, flowers, balloons, her birthday outfit, the guests attire, the invitations and if she has her way, her fingernails too!  If you hang with us over on The Cottage Mama Facebook page, then you know that I wasn’t sure about this theme at first, but now I’m really excited about it.  I can’t wait to start designing her orange party outfit!

The invitations went out this last week and I designed them in Picnik.  I was going to show you all exactly how to make something like this of your very own, but since Picnik has decided to close, I’ll have to wait and show you in a different program (once I decide my favorite alternative).

Here are Savannah’s orange birthday invitations:

On the backside of the invitation I included a recent picture that I took of the birthday girl.  I know invitations usually get thrown away right after the party, so I thought some of our family members could enjoy it a little longer with the picture on the back.

I had these invitations printed through VistaPrint.  I really love this site for inexpensive custom printing options. I print a lot of my business pieces for The Cottage Mama through them such as business cards, postcards, stickers, return address labels, ect.  I’ve had really good luck with this company.  Our Christmas cards had a little bit of a printing issue, but they fixed the printing problem and rushed delivered them several days later, no questions asked.

VistaPrint allows you to upload your own custom design which is great or you can use one of the many templates they provide.  You can design your cards or printed material in any program that you have (i.e. Photoshop, I-photo, Picasa, Picnik) and then just upload it to the site.  The thing you will want to keep in mind is to make sure you’ve resized your design to fit whatever size card you are printing.  Savannah’s birthday invitation was designed to be printed on a 5 x 7 postcard.

So, here is a blank version of the invite I designed for Savannah’s party in case you want to throw your very own orange party.  You can save the picture to your computer or you can head over to Google Docs where I’ve uploaded it and grab it HERE.  Just pull the invite into any program you have and add your text.  If you decide to bring it into Microsoft Word then you will need to add a text box on top of the picture to add your text.

I’m looking forward to sharing more details about the party as they unfold.
Have you ever thrown a color-themed party?
If so, I’d love to hear about it!

  1. I am planning a PINK party for my older daughter Arden for the same date as Savannah’s party. I’ve put a Pink Party board together on Pinterest – I have way more ideas than time to make them all happen. After I had ordered the invitations, she then started asking for other color-themed parties – orange among them. Well, it’s going to be pink now!

  2. Considering that orange is my absolute fave color….this is just awesome! Love the invite design!

  3. I’ll be excited to see what you do since my soon to be 7 year old has a favorite color of orange as well!

  4. “Orange you glad Savannah is turning 4” SO CUTE!! That knock knock joke is one of our favorites these days. I love how the invitation turned out and I can’t wait to see more party details!!

  5. Very cute idea. I like the unique invite!

  6. My friend and I threw a bridal shower in all different shades of purple to match the bride’s wedding colors. Our biggest bang for the buck was PAPER!! We used scrapbook paper to line cake plates for cupcakes (with shades of lavender for the icing, of course) and candies as well as to cut out bunting and flowers from. We also asked everyone to wear purple, like you did, and it really made the theme POP. Another thing we learned was that it was WAY easier to stick to all different shades of purple rather than trying to match one distinct shade. Our two small accent colors were a pale green and a grayish-silver. Our signature drink was a purplish blueberry-lemonade. Since you have yellow in the invitation already, you’re already set with great citrus hues for food or drink choices! Best of luck! I’m sure it’ll look great!

  7. We had a rainbow birthday party for my daughter this past year. I made her a rainbow dress (aureliamarie.com),and we had some of her friends pitch in food according to favorite color to supplement our by-color buffet. (Yes, our family blog really is that far behind, ha ha.) Our budget was practically zero, so we didn’t have a lot of decor, but we gave away M&M’s in cellophane bags stacked red to violet, which ended up being lavender, since that is all that I could locate in town. 🙂 Making it work!!

  8. I love your orange invitations! I have a question about up loading things to Google Docs. Is there a tutiorial out there for that? I made a Menu in Microsoft Office Publisher and was trying to share it but I cant get it to work I have never uploaded anything so I was look for some instructions but have not been able to find any. Sorry I know this is not really your thing I was just wondering if you could point me in the right dircetion. Thanks!

  9. How much fun will this be. She is so creative!! And BEAUTIFUL!!

  10. So cute. When my oldest daughter turned 10 we did a Wizard of Oz party. The cake was frosted white on the outside with black tornado like squiggles of icing, but inside each of the 6 layers was white cake vibrantly colored (red. orange, yellow, green, blue, purple). This copied the movie which starts in black and white and turns to color when Dorothy lands in Oz. Did lots of themed activities that coordinated with scenes in the movie while we watched and had technicolor decorations and vibrant candies. Seems thst the idea came from an old American Girls magazine. An old pair of high heels covered in glue and red glitter were part of the center piece… kids parties are so much fun. Hope she has a great 4th birthday!
